BRUNELLO Di MONTALCINO

COL D'ORCIA

1997

AN outstanding Brunello from the famed 1997 Vintage so many years ago. This Brunello
has stood the test of time, and at 25 years of age is drinking beautiful. It's full of life with very nice red fruit flavors, such as Bing Cherries and Redcurrants, with slight hints of Cocoa and thyme. The wine still has some great flesh, with a good long finish. Quite simple it's a gorgeous wine, and one we were so lucky to taste.

The Count Francesco Maruni Cinzano always brings one great  old vintage Col D'Orcia Brunello from the estates wine library, and we were quite lucky to taste the 1997 vintage this turn around.
Francesco was not there himself, but he was represented by his son Santiago Maruni at this event.

Produced only in years in which the grapes reach the very highest levels of maturity, this undosed brut Champagne is skilfully blended to reveal the full richness and character of the three grape varieties. No dosage is used to gvie the wine greater roundness at the end of the crafting process; all attention is focused on obtaining a very pure and subtle harmony. Ultime Zéro Dosage remains in the cellar for longer than average, allowing the wine to mature slowly and perfectly.

Dinner at Bar Pitti NYC

BAR PITTI

Joe Macari, Eddie Macari, Dakota, Tommy Macari

Chris, Terik, Michele, Daniel Bellino Zwicke

Another dinner at Bar Pitti. There have been many over the years, both lunch and dinner, it's always a good time at Bar Pitti, a restaurant that makes some of the best Italian food in New York.

Cousin Joe gave me a call on Sunday saying he wanted to have a dinner at Bar Pitti this week. A great idea, as always. So Wednesday roll around and Joe calls me, and tell me they are on their way (Joe and Tommy).
A couple hours later, they call and tell me to meet them at Houston and Macdougal. It's Ash Wednesday and I was inside Saint Anthony's Church on Sullivan Street, so I was two minutes away. So I go over to Houston and Macdougal and I see Joe inside a Black Landrover. Joe says, "Tommy's inside (Song Napule Pizza), getting a Pizza." Cool. We wait in the SUV. Tommy caomes back with a nice Pizza Margherita. We're starting the day off right.

Pizza Margherita

Song Napule Pizzeria

I've been going to Sogno Toscano for the past 3 months and posting pictures on Instagram, so Tommy and Eddie have been wanting to go there, so before our dinner at Bar Pitti, we're head over there to drink a little wine and have some Salumi. It's myself, Tommy and Joe, and Terik and Tommy's friend Dakota meet up with us a bit later. We get a nice bottle of Sardinian Vermentino.
Tommy orders a plate of Salumi and Cheese. Joe's looking at all the food products (Tarrali, Olive Oil, Pasta and assorted Italian Food Products) on the shelves, and says, "I gotta get a bag of some of this stuff." We drink the wine. It's really good. Everyone loves the place, the vibe, the workers, the Salumi, Formaggio, and everything about the place. It's really a nice little Italian Wine Bar / Salumeria, and they are doing well. Bravo.

A Glass of CHIANTI

SOGNO TOSCANO

GREENWICH VILLAGE

We had a great time at Sogno Toscano. We finsih up and head over to Bar Pitti.

Inside BAR PITTI

We get to Bar Pitti, and are warmly welcomed by Roberto, Enzo, and the guys.
Giovanni comes over and gives us the warmest welcome imaginiable. He hasn't seen Joe, Tommy, and Eddie in a while, and we're all hugs, and happy to see one another. We chat a few minutes and Giovanni puts down two bottles of Solaia, and says, "This is for you guys," My cousin Joe, says "No, you can't do this," but Giovanni won't take no for an answer, and says, "No baby, this is on me. It's from my own personal collection." I tell you, two bottles of Solaia 2017 is quite a nice gift. Giovanni says, "You guys never let us pay for the Pizza. This is on me." And so we drink the Solaia, and it's damn good. I Love it. Waht's not to love. If you know Soalai, you know what I'm talking about.

Michele comes in, and a few minutes later, Cousin Eddie arrives. We drink the wine, and are having quite a nice time, chit-chatting, and sipping on Solaia. We take quite a little while before we order some food, but when we do, it's serious.

"A Gift From GIOVANNI"

2 Bottles SOLAIA 2017

Excellent Wine

We finally get around to ordering, and we get Eggpkant Parmigiano, Meatballs,
Sauteed Spinach, and Shrimp. It's all good, especially the Melanzane Parmigiano, which is the best in town. I really love the way they make the Eggpalnt here. It is spot on and as good as can be.

We then had a pasta course of Spagehtti Vongole (Clam Sauce), Tortelloni that were quite tasty, and an awesome plate of Paparadelle with Duck Ragu. "Outstanding."

FONTALLORO

And PAPARADELLE w/ DUCK RAGU

We order our main courses. I get the Bolito di Manza. It's boiled beef, and for those of you who do not know, it taste much better than it sounds. It's Beef Short Ribs and it's tasty and succulent. Joe got the Oxtails (Coda di Vaccinara), and iI was a lucky recipient of one of his Oxtails. Along with the Calves Liver, these two dishes (Bolito & Oxtails) are the dishes I get most, whenever I eat at Bar Pitti, a place I started going to with my ex-girlfriend Dante when the place first opened. I was one of their first customers. My girlfriend and I discovered it, ans started eating there every week. We told my friends John O', Michael, and Jorge about it, and we all started having lunch there (or Lanza's) every Saturday for lunch, befroe we all went into work at Les Halles's at night. Good times.

Well, back to our dinner last night. Everything was great. We all got to chat a lot and Michele was telling some great stories, including when her and Giovanni got married in Greve, at Vicchomaggio, an Italian Wine Estate that makes Chianti in the town of Greve.

We got some Panacotta for dessert, and Robero brought us all some Passito di Pantelleria Italian dessert wine on the house.

Yes, it was quite a nice night, and we were all happy to get together.

Basta and Ciao for now.

CHIANTI GRAND TASTING  ...  New York

Yes, the Grand Chianti Tasting is today. Having my morning coffee, and getting ready to head up to The Alman Building for the tasting. Well, two down and one to go, for this latest barrage of Italian WIne Tastings that started with the Brunello Tasting on Wednesday, followed by Tre Bicchieri on Friday, and now the CHiant Tasting today. Quite something. After two years of no tastings at all, due to the Pandemic, we now see a concentration of the 3 biggest Italian Wine Events of the year, all in a short 8 days time.

I'm looking forward to tasting some great CHianti and other wines made in the CHianti Zone. There will be a lot of wonderful Chinti wines to taste among the 50 participating estates, but I always have my sentimental favorites, which include Castello Verrazzano in Greve, from my good friend the Cavalier Luigi Cappellini, always some real authentic ( no Merlot, No Cab) Chianti wines, along with the estates great example of Vino Santo. Also in Greve, and along with Verrazzano as my two favorites are the wines from Villa Calinaia and my friends Conti Capponi, Sebastiano and Nicola Capponi, two brothers of the noble Florentine Family of Capponi. Villa Calcinaia is one of the most and important estates in all of Chianti Classico. The Capponi Family have been making wine in Greve for more than 500 years. Quite a pedigree.

Third on the list, and along with Villa Calcinaia, the estate of Fontodi from Giovanni Manetti in Pnazano, the next town south of Greve on Chianti Classico'S Chaintigiana Road that runs sout from Florence in the North, to Siena on the southern end. On the first day that I ever visited a wine estate in Italy, and was given a private tour and tasting by the owner of the estate, the first estate was Villa Calcinaia and The Conti Capponi, and after we took a tour of Villa Calciania and had a wonderful lunch with the two Counts, we left and made our way to Panzano and the Fontodi Wine Estate to meet up with Giovanni Manetti, who took us on a tour of the cellears and the vindeyards, before bringing us inside for a tasting of Fontodi's wonderful Chainti, Vin Santo, and Super Tuscan (Flaccinella) Wines. It was quite a day, and one I cherish to this day,

Well, Boys and Girls. It's time to go. Up to 18th Street and the Altman Builing where all the wonderful Chianti, Vin Santo, and my Tucan Friends await. I will taste the fine wines, visit and chit-chat with friends, and I will report back to you tomorrow to let you know about the wine and how the day went. So Ciao for now.

At The CHIANTI GRAND TASTING in NEW YORK

Feb. 28, 2022

Just got back from the Chianti Tasting (New York). I drank a lot of great Chianti and some phenominal Vin Santo, and no Super Tuscans, which I thought they would be pouring at the tasting, but no. No problem. I was toatlly satisfied to be drinking just Chianti, and Vin Santo, the two great wines of the Chianti Classico Region. No need for any others.

I tasted at least 40 CHianti, and really enjoyed them. I loved the Chianti from ny friends the Capponi's at Villa Calcinaia, and the wines from my pal Cavaliere Luigi Cappellino of Catell Verrazzano in Greve. I have to sat, after tasting all of these wine, my favorite CHianti of all was the Chianti Verrazzano Reserva 2016. The iwne was amazing. It was my favorite CHianti of the day, as well as being my favorite wine of the past 8 days of 3 Major Italian Wine Tastings in the past 8 days. The Verrazzano Reserve Chianti 2016 was my favorite of hundreds ofItalian Wines in the past 8 days, plain and simple.

I tried about 15 VinSanto offerings from : Villa Calcinaia, Verrazzano, Felsia, Quercetto, Badia Colto Buono, Vicchamaggio and many more, and loved every single Vin Santo I tasted. They were all dilicious, but if I had to pick one that was my favorite, I'd have to say that it was the Vin Santo from Villa Calcinaia in Greve, in Chianti.

It was a great day of tasting. I saw a few good friends from Italy and a few New York Italian Wine Friends as well. Any day is great day when you drink Italian Wine.

Tre Bicchieri 2022 New York

TRE BICCHIERI 2022

NEW YORK

It's that time of year again. Well this year anyway, No Tre Biccieri last year (2021) du to the Covid Pandemic. Yes we missed it last year, so of course, we are looking forwatd to it that much more, this year.

We haven't had any tasting at all for almost two years now, so I'm quite happy about the current glut of Three Big Italian Wine Tasting in a weeks span, which began yesterday with The Brunello Tasting at the Alman Building on 5th Avenue. It was good, but I wasn't expecting the formatt the tasting was in, due to Covid. We sat at tables of 8 people each, we filled out cards (orders) of the Brunellos that we wanted to taste. Waiters took our orders, filled bottle carriers with the wines, brought them to the table and poured them into our glasses. It took a bit of getting used to, but after a little whoile it was fine.

This wine tasting formatt had its pros and cons. The Pros being, it was a little more relaxed, and you got to sit and rest. The Cons being, # 1, it took a lot longer to get and drink your wines, # 2 You couldn't get to taste as many wines, due to the formatt. # 3 and one of the most important things to me and other, you couldn't really smooze. You didn't get to see as many people, as you would have in the normal walking around from table to table formatt.

Well enough of that. THat was yesterday. Tomorrow is the most Important Italian Wine Tasting of the year, "Tre Bicchieri" hosted each year ny Gamberro Rosso in New York, Italy, Hong Kong, Chicago, San Francisco and other cities around the World.

The Tre Bicchieri Tasting is of Italy's Best and most important wines from all regions of Italy. I love tasting the all the great Italian Wine, but again, a big factor in the pleasure of going to a Tre Biccjiero Tasting is the chance to see all of my Italian friends who make wine in Italy, as well as seeing all my New York Italian Wine Friends as well.

So, looking forward to tomorrow, seeing my friends and tasting a lot of Great Italian Wine. And as always, I will taste, take notes of my favorites, and I will report back tomorrow or the next day, and post all the info I can.

So, "Ciao for Now" !!!  Talk to you guys soon.

Basta!

The BRUNELLO Tasting

BRUNELLO

Some of My Favorites

The Brunello tasting is tomorrow. Can't wait. The New York Brunello Tasting is always an event I look forward to. I'll be drinking the newly released Brunello di Maontacino 2016, the Reserve Brunellos of 2015, Moscadello di Maontalcino, Super Tuscan offerings and wines from the San Antimo Region within Montalcino.

When it comes to Brunello, there is without question one Brunello producer who makes my favorite Brunello of all, and that's Fattoria Barbi and their Brunello Normale and Brunello Reserva, with its amazing Red Label that I love so much. Barbi is one of Montalcino's oldest producers, among the First 30, they make amaing Brunello and other wines, and they have one of the most Gorgeous Wine Cellars in the wole of Italy. Bar none.

My second favorite Brunello comes form my pal  Conti Franceso Maruni Cinzano, who along with his family own the great wine estate Col d' Orcia in Montalcino, producing some of, easily the World's Best Brunello. Francesco, always has wonderful older vintages of his wonderful Brunello for me to taste, and it is always a very special treat when I do, especially when he taste me on his most amazing Brunello Reserva Poggio al Vento. This particular time, Francesco tasted me 2004 vintage of the Col d' Orcia Brunello "Poggio al Vento" Reserva 2004.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of my Italian friends from Montalcino, as well as drinking their wines. It's going to be quite a day, needless to say, all those wonderful 2015 and 2016 Brunellos, the Moscadellos, Rosoo di Montalcinos and other wines from Montalcino.

As always, I look forward to seeing Conti Francesco Conzano Maruni, the Colombinis from Barbi, other friends from Italy, and my New York Italian Wine Friends as well. They'll all be there. We'll drink Brunello and munch on Salami and Cheese, Chit-Chat and catch up, as this (finally) will be the first big Italian Wine Tasting in New York in Two Years, since the Worldwide Pandemic started back in early 2020.

Of numerous things that have changed our lives as the results of the Pandemic, I really can't complain too much, but I must say, "I really miss going to Italian Wine Dinners, Luncheons, and Tastting," and now, finally I have my first in two years, tomorrow at The Benvenuto Brunello New York Tasting 2022. And if that wasn't enough? Friday is an even bigger event, and the one, that when it comes to Italian Wine in New York, it is the biggest most improtant Italian Wine Event of The Year, and that is the Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Tasting, which is Friday February 25th, 2022 ... The Tre Bicchieri Tasting is of what according to Gambero Rosso are the Best Italian Wines of the year, and are scored by glasses: 1, 2, or 3, with Three Glasses as a top rating for Italian Wines. For those who may not know Ganbero Rosso is the Italian Food and Wine Magazine, that is the Wine Spectator of Italy, just to give you an idea.

Anyway, enough on Tre Bicchieri, we were talking about Brunello and the wines of Mantalcino, and the Benvenuto Brunello Tasting, weren't we?  I will go to the tasting, see my friends, taste the Brunello, have a good time, and I will report back to you within the next couple of days to talk about about the Tasting, the Brunellos, and the other wines, and as always, I will tell you which Brunellos I like best.

So, until tomorrow and the day after, have a good day, one and all.

Daniel Bellino Zwicke

"We will be tasting Brunello 2017, the latest release of Brunellos, as well as the Brunello Riservas 2016, a vintage considered to be one of the greatest in Moantalcino.

BRUNELLO di MONTALCINO 2016  "A GREAT VINTAGE"

Yes 2016, as was 2015, a great vintage for Brunello. Some say one of the greatest.
All the wheather conditions were just about as good as one growing Sangiovese Grosso grapes in Montalcino could possible want. The combination of Rain, Sun, and Temeratures was ideal thoughtout the growing and harvest season in Montalcino. In Montalcino, it wasn't too hot, it wasn't too dray, "It was just Right."

When all is said and done, yes this was one of the Great Vintages for Brunello, and should stand out as Legendary. Stock up, store, and enjoy now and years down the road.
